Local Currency and Foreign Exchange rates

The basic unit of currency in Namibia is the Namibian Dollar (NAD or N$), which is divided into 100 cents. There are silver and bronze coins of 5, 10, 50 cents, 1 and 5 dollars. Notes are issued in denominations of 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, and 200 dollars.

The Namibian dollar exchange rates are determined by the interbank market, which varies daily. Participants may wish to obtain current information from the internet. Commercial Banks and Forex Bureaus provide exchange facilities and they are found at the Airport and all Malls. Most of the banks are open between 09h00am to 15h30pm from Monday to Friday and between 08h30am to 12h00pm on Saturdays. Some of the Forex Bureaux may be open outside these hours.

Some of the Hotels are also offering exchange facilities, often at an extra fee and/or less favourable rates. Forex services are available at Hosea Kutako International Airport, usually from early morning until late at night. It is also worth noting that the South African Rands are also used in Namibia without any conversion.

Electrical appliances & recommended plugs in use in Namibia

In Namibia, the electrical system operates on a standard voltage of 220-240 Volt and a frequency of 50 Hz, similar to many countries in Southern Africa. The country uses Type D and Type M plugs and sockets:

  1. Type D plugs: These are characterized by three large, round pins arranged in a triangular pattern. Type D plugs are most commonly used for older appliances but are still in circulation.
  2. Type M plugs: These also have three round pins in a triangular layout, but the pins are larger compared to Type D. This type is more commonly used for heavy-duty appliances.

Visitors from countries with different plug types or voltage standards, a plug adapter and possibly a voltage converter may be needed to use electrical devices safely. Most modern appliances like laptops and phone chargers, however, are often dual-voltage, making them compatible with Namibia’s power system as long as the correct plug adapter is used.
