Shaping the Future of AI in African Libraries: An Invitation to Contribute

Libraries across Africa are changing. New technologies are helping libraries serve their communities better. One important technology is artificial intelligence (AI). To guide its use, the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) is developing two important frameworks.

The first framework will guide how libraries use AI in their services. It will show how to adopt AI tools safely and responsibly. It will also help libraries train their staff and manage data ethically. Most importantly, it will consider how AI affects library users and communities.

The second framework will focus on partnerships with AI technology companies. Libraries often work with these companies to digitize materials or use data. This framework will set rules to make sure these partnerships are fair and safe. It will include safeguards, oversight, and clear conditions for collaboration.

AfLIA wants these frameworks to reflect the real needs of African libraries. That is why your voice matters.

This survey is open to library and information professionals, administrators, researchers, and policymakers. Anyone interested in AI and libraries across Africa can participate. Your answers will help AfLIA create practical and ethical guidelines. The goal is to make AI work for libraries, not against them.

Your insights will help libraries adopt AI in ways that are safe, fair, and useful for communities.

The frameworks will guide how AI tools are used and how libraries partner with technology companies. They will protect library users, collections, and staff.

Join the effort to shape these frameworks. Share your experience and ideas to help African libraries lead in AI adoption.
