The African Library and Information Association and Institutions (AfLIA) stands in solidarity with the Kenyatta University community, particularly the library staff, faculty, and students, following the devastating fire that engulfed the Kenyatta University Old Moi Library on Friday, May 3rd, 2024. While there has been considerable damage to library resources and property, we take solace in the fact that as of now, no injury or loss of life has been reported.
We extend our deepest condolences to the library staff, faculty, and students who have been affected by this tragic incident. AfLIA understands the profound impact that the loss of a library has on the academic community, as it is not just a physical space but a repository of knowledge, and a hub for learning and intellectual exchange.
The urgent need for strategic disaster management measures to safeguard our invaluable cultural and intellectual heritage cannot be overemphasised in light of this disaster. Digitalisation of library resources and embracing open access to scholarly resources offer an efficient, cost-effective and sustainable pathway for mitigating the impact of such calamities in the future, and making our libraries more resilient.
Indeed, the loss of the Kenyatta University Old Moi Library is not just a loss for the university community, but for the broader academic and intellectual community in Kenya and beyond. AfLIA’s membership, Governing Council and Secretariat therefore stand in solidarity with the Kenyatta University community and call upon the Government of Kenya, institutions, and all library stakeholders to offer support towards the recovery and rebuilding efforts of the Kenyatta University Old Library.
