Conversations on how librarians can open up and celebrate African traditional knowledge

AUGUST 8, 2023

AfLIA and OER Africa are hosting ‘conversations’ over two days to discuss the rich cultural heritage, local histories and knowledge generated in Africa. The conversations will include how African traditional knowledge and local history, in the form of living documents and vibrant oral traditions, can be opened up to the world, and made available via open licences.

Day 1

  • How African traditional Knowledge and local history (ATK&LH) can be opened up (this will include how they can be collected and permission given to make content open). This conversation will be led by Dr. Nkem Osuigwe, Human Capacity Development & Training Director, AfLIA
  • How African traditional knowledge, culture, food and stories have been adapted in the US, and implications for sharing more widely. This conversation will be led by Liz Levey, Consultant.
  • How a library can publicise traditional knowledge and customs. This conversation will be led by Dr. Florence Amaka Nwofor, Senior Lecturer in Library and Information Sciences Department, Faculty Of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Day 2

  • Licences should be open so that content can be used and shared by all . This includes adapting Creative Commons (CC) licences so that they are understandable and in a language local communities speak. These licences may require adaptation and translation. This conversation will be led by Dr. Tony Lelliott, OER Africa, Saide.
  • Translations (and how to go about it). This conversation will be led by Dorcas Wepukhulu, Partner Development Coordinator for African Storybook, Saide.
  • Documentation, and how the African traditional Knowledge and local history can be embedded in OERs. This conversation will be led by Dr. Nkem Osuigwe.
