Call for Nominations – AfLIA AWARDS

Introduction

The Executive Committee, AfLIA had at their last meeting decided on the conferment of Awards to deserving individuals/organizations in different areas of the Library sector. The first Awards are to be given at the closing dinner of the 3rd AfLIA Conference and 5th African Library Summit, Nairobi, Kenya. The Secretariat was charged with outlining the criteria for the Awards and calling for nominations. The call for nominations at this instance are for four (4) Awards namely:

  1. Emerging Young Librarian Leader
  2. Best Library Association of the Year
  3. African Library Champion
  4. Lifetime Award

The nominations for the Awards should be sent to the AfLIA Secretariat at secretariat@aflia.net  with a copy to adminasst@aflia.net latest, Thursday, 4th April, 2019

Please Note

Chairpersons of the Academic/Special Library Section, Public/Community Library Section, Parliamentary Libraries Section, Library Consortia, National Libraries Section, LIS Education Section will need to identify and assist in providing criteria for the conferment of Awards for their Sections at AfLIA 2021 Conference.


Call for Nominations: AfLIA Awards

Nominations are invited from members of the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions(AfLIA) for the following Awards which will be presented at the 3rd AfLIA Conference & 5th African Library Summit holding 19-24th May, 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya. Kindly check the criteria for each award before nominating.

The Awards are;

  1. Emerging Young Librarian Leader
  2. Best National Library Association of the Year
  3. African Library Champion
  4. Lifetime Award

Emerging Young Librarian Leader

This award will recognize and honour a young librarian who has shown promise of being a leader in the profession. The Award is meant to encourage young librarians to participate in activities of the profession at local, national and regional levels. A plaque and a certificate of honour will be presented to the successful nominee during the closing dinner at the 3rd AfLIA Conference & 5th African Library Summit, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Criteria

  • Must have demonstrated leadership qualities or shown leadership potentials and be active in the local or national level of the country’s Library Association.
  • Must not have more than 5yrs experience in the library field.
  • Must have shown commitment to library advocacy on any platform(s).
  • Must be a member of the national library association.
  • The Library of the nominee must be a current member of the national association and also of AfLIA.

Nomination Procedure

  1. The nominee should fill the appropriate form and attach documents where necessary substantiating his/her claims
  2. Inclusion of a supporting letter from a Library association member within the highest governing body of the association. The letter should include:
  • the nominee’s name and contact details
  • details of the nominee’s contribution to activities of the Association or outstanding service(s) to the user communities, including a list of any elected, appointed or co-opted leadership roles and/or outstanding/innovative library service as the nominee has stated in the application form
  • the nominator’s full name and contact information

Best National Library Association Award

The Award is to recognize and honour national Library Associations that are extraordinary in growing membership, training and building capacity of their members, inclusion of young professionals in governance and activities, vibrant advocacy and any other innovative strides. A plaque and a certificate of honour will be presented to the successful Association during the closing dinner at the 3rd AfLIA Conference & 5th African Library Summit, in Nairobi, Kenya

Criteria

  • The association must be a member of AfLIA.
  • The association must have at least 100 registered members (individual and institutional)
  • The association must have a national executive committee
  • The association must have held workshops and conferences for the past 3yrs consistently.
  • The association must have a functional website.
  • The association must show membership growth
  • Evidence of recognition/inclusion of young professionals in activities/programs

Nomination Procedure

  1. Complete the application form
  2. Write a letter explaining why the national Library association should win the Best Library Association Award in Africa.
  3. Attach documents substantiating information supplied on the form.

The nominations for the Award should be sent to the AfLIA Secretariat at secretariat@aflia.net with a copy to adminasst@aflia.net latest, Thursday, 4th April, 2019.

African Library Champion Award

The Award is instituted to recognize and honour individuals (non-librarians) and organizations who have shown commitment and support to libraries and the Library and Information profession in a particular country or across countries in Africa as a strategic partner. A plaque and a certificate of honour will be presented to the successful nominee at the closing dinner of the 3rd AfLIA Conference & 5th African Library Summit, in Kenya. It is expected that the winner of this Award will continue to show support to libraries through advocacy and other means.

Criteria for nomination of Awardees

  • The person / organization must have made vast contributions to libraries and the practice of the library and information science
  • Must be a person/organization of integrity in the society and must not have had any adverse findings made against him /her/it by a court of law or currently standing trial
  • Must be active in supporting the national Library association of his/hers/its country

Nomination Procedure

  • An individual/ institution accurately completes the relevant nomination form
  • Attaches a letter justifying why the individual/organization should receive the Award
  • Attaches any relevant documents to buttress what is written in the letter
  • If an individual, attaches a curriculum vitae of the nominee

AfLIA Lifetime Award

The AfLIA Lifetime Award is to recognize and honour Librarians of African descent all over the world who have made significant contributions to the growth of the African library sector. A plaque and a certificate of honour will be presented to the successful nominee at the closing dinner of the 3rd AfLIA Conference & 5th African Library Summit, in Kenya.

Criteria

  • Shown outstanding and innovative leadership in or for the African Library sector,
  • Have made significant contributions to the Library sector in Africa spanning over a period of not less than 25years
  • Have consistently stood for the promotion and improvement of the African Library sector
  • Must have institutional membership or is a Friend of AfLIA

Nomination Procedure

  • Complete the relevant application form
  • Write a 500-word proposal on why the nominee deserves the AfLIA Lifetime Award
  • Attach documents substantiating information supplied on the form.
  • A referral letter from the national library association of your country

The nominations for the Award should be sent to the AfLIA Secretariat at secretariat@aflia.net with a copy to adminasst@aflia.net latest, Thursday, 4th April, 2019.
