#AfLibWk2025: One citation at a time, Libraries made Africa more visible

The African Librarians Week 2025 (AfLibWk 2025) marked another powerful milestone in the journey to improve the visibility of African knowledge on Wikimedia platforms. Organized by the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA), the month-long campaign ran from 5th to 31st May 2025 under the theme: “Library catalogues, linked data and Wikimedia projects: 1 citation, 1 resource made visible makes a difference!”

This year’s campaign demonstrated how library catalogues, linked data practices, and Wikimedia projects can work together to amplify African scholarship and knowledge resources globally.

Campaign highlights and achievements

Throughout May 2025, librarians, information professionals, and knowledge activists across Africa collaborated to close information gaps on major Wikimedia platforms including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource. Participants contributed through adding reliable references, editing existing articles, creating new articles, uploading images, proofreading and validating content, and linking library resources to Wikimedia knowledge ecosystems. The results were remarkable and reflected the dedication of the African library community.
