Registration open: Open Data Management Foundational Course for African Librarians, 1st Cohort

Thursday, 29 August 2024

Open data management is crucial for African librarians as it empowers them to enhance research transparency, accessibility, and collaboration across the continent. AfLIA, in partnership with Figshare and Africa PID Alliance, is offering a four-week online course titled “Open Data Management Foundational Course for African Librarians”. This course is entirely free and aims to strengthen the research data management capacity of librarians in Africa.

Course Overview

Participants in the Open Data Management Foundational Course for African Librarians will gain an understanding of:

  • The importance of open data management in Africa and open data principles, including the FAIR and CARE principles.
  • Best practices in FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data management, including persistent identifiers (PIDs), policies, and plans.
  • Data sovereignty.
  • Open research data infrastructures.

The virtual course will start on Monday, October 7 2024 and includes weekly live webinars each Wednesday and online interactions via AfLIA’s online learning platform (Moodle). An optional (but highly recommended) 1 hour live onboarding webinar will take place on Thursday, October 3.

Certificates

Two types of certificates will be issued:

  1. Certificate of Excellence: Awarded to those who perform exceptionally well in the course.
  2. Certificate of Completion: Given to those who successfully complete the course but do not meet the criteria for excellence.

Please note that AfLIA is not obligated to award certificates to participants who fail to actively engage in the course.

Target participants

The course is designed for academic and research librarians, as well as library educators in Africa. Other library and information professionals, as well as students interested in gaining knowledge in open research data management, are also welcome to register.
