New cultural heritage grants available: Modern Engagement Archives Program

5 September, 2023

Funding is now available for documentation and digitization projects to preserve cultural heritage.

The Modern Endangered Archives Program (MEAP) provides funds for projects that document, digitize, and make accessible endangered archival materials from the 20th and 21st Centuries. Collections focus on history, society, culture, and politics, with an emphasis on social justice, human rights activism, cultural production, indigenous experiences, and under-documented communities. Materials may include print, photography, film, audio, ephemera, and digital objects.

MEAP invites applications for its sixth cohort of projects designed to preserve, document, and digitize collections at risk from environmental conditions, political uncertainty, inherently unsustainable media, inappropriate storage, or communal and social change.

MEAP funds projects focused on collections from the 20th and 21st centuries. Collections must be held and digitization work completed outside the U.S. and Europe. See full eligibility requirements on their website.

MEAP offers three grants this cycle: Planning Grants (1 year, up to $20,000), Project Grants (2 years, up to $70,000) and Regional Grants (2 years, up to $100,000).

What’s new?

  • Increased Grant Amounts for all documentation and digitization awards. Planning Grants can now budget up to $20,000 for organization and inventory work; Project Grants up to $70,000 for digitization and metadata creation.
  • New Grant Opportunity. Regional Grants should be used to create digital collections that include cultural heritage materials from three or more institutions, families, or archival repositories but related to one theme, community or historical event.

Application

All applications must be submitted in English through our Survey Monkey Apply system. Application details and resources are available on their website. The Application portal will open on September 12, 2023.

Preliminary applications are due on Monday, November 13, 2023 (11:59 pm Pacific Time). For more information, kindly download the attached handbook.
